World Chocolate Day is almost here …
Hi there Duppies,
We’re back again with some more fun and exciting ways for you to make your own rum cocktails and this time we’re featuring one of the world's most beloved and indulgent ingredients; chocolate as International Chocolate Day is fast approaching on the 7th July.
So, what’s all the fuss about? Cocoa itself originates from Central and South America, but today it mostly comes from West Africa, with an estimated 1.5 million cocoa farms located there. The Ivory Coast in particular is the single largest producer of cocoa, providing roughly 40 percent of the world’s supply and what would we all do without it?
The word chocolate can be traced back to the Aztec word "xocoatl," the name for a bitter drink made from cacao beans. The Mayans and Aztecs believed the beans had mystical properties and used them during important rituals. This was then sweetened by the Spanish and taken back to Europe, catapulting it into popular demand. That being said, the Swedish were the first to invent milk chocolate as we know it today and it was in fact the British that produced the first chocolate bar, so the chocolate trade really is a world wide love affair … quite literally gaining aphrodisiac status.
These banging recipes are going to be for the sweet toothed rum lovers amongst you, so whip them up at home, either as a cheeky treat for yourself or to share with friends and family, and be sure to give them a try.
